HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD is a short-form Docuseries exploring the power of Public Art and innovation to uplift and revitalize urban communities. The Pilot Season revolves around the Arts District of Wynwood Miami, featuring an array of internationally acclaimed and locally respected Street Artists, Graffiti Writers and Muralists.

In 2009, Urban Visionary and Placemaker Tony Goldman partnered with Jeffrey Deitch (Deitch Projects Soho and now director of MoCa Los Angeles) to create the Wynwood Walls. What began with a series of parking lots, loading docks, and drab rundown factory buildings, became a curation of high caliber murals from Futura, Shepard Fairey, OS Gemeos, Kenny Scharf and others in its first year. The Walls opened for Art Basel 2009, and now two years later the collection has expanded to include over thirty artists from around the world, becoming a “Town Center” in a district that has grown into one of the largest concentrations of commissioned public art murals in the World.

HERE COMES THE NEIGHBORHOOD explores a unique juncture in history as a new community emerges and evolves. A progressive urban revitalization campaign is examined in the first person, using this year’s new Artists and their commissions as a lens to explore a neighborhood in transition. The Series is framed by colorful overview and concluding episodes, providing the scope of past, present and future. Each episode is accented by images from legendary Documentary Photographer Martha Cooper, who has been capturing The Walls since they began in 2009. Her Photographs will also appear in a Special Edition Art Book “The Wynwood Walls and Doors” set to be released this year at Art Basel 2011.

D.A.D.E. X SK545 QA

As you know art basel 2011 is around the corner and many artist will be in town showing of their work. I am personally looking forward to checking out the CO11ECTIVE show witch will be located at 215 NW 24th Street. To peep the homie SK545 and his first art showing. For those of you who aint familiar with his work, heres a quick lil QA we did with SK.

R. Introduce yourself to the D.A.D.E.FAM.

SK. What’s up family. I write SK 545 STV WH KBT.

R. Tell us about your upcoming show & and what we can expect?

SK. The show is called The Co11ective. It’s comprised of three photographers and eight artists. It’s heavily influenced by graffiti backgrounds but not what you’d expect to find in a graffiti exhibition. This is the first time I’m crossing over from illegal street art to a collaborative art venue. My exhibit entails my personal thoughts, feelings, and actual events I experienced in my last relationship. It’s a topic most everyone can relate to.

You definitely want to check us out during Art Basel December 1 – 4

We are located at:

215 NW 24th Street

R. Most people would not share such a touchy subject, what motivated you to show the world what you went through?

SK. I’m not embarrassed about what happened. I’m sure I’m not alone. I’m probably saying what most people are thinking. The paintings were originally more of a therapeutic outlet and eventually evolved in to an entire concept or theme. I believe your best work is produced when you are passionate about it.

R. Besides the CO11ECTIVE show where else can the public find your work?

SK. This is an original concept of mine. I’m not sure I’ll revisit this topic again. Most of my work can be found on the streets of Miami, although I will have some additional pieces displayed at other venues during Art Basel this year. We’ll see how this turns out. Maybe this venue will open up some doors for me.

R. Is there a difference in style between your gallery work and street work? which do you feel more drawn to?

SK. The work on theses canvas is done primarily with acrylic ink and brush versus strictly spray paint on the streets. There’s endless hours spent on the detail of these canvases. While there definitely are differences there are also some similarities. Getting the audience’s attention is something both styles share. I personally am drawn more to the street art.

R. What can we expect in the future from SK545?

SK. I always keep looking to do more, do it bigger, do it better.

R. Shout outs?

Sk. Simple. STV, WH, KBT,FS, and DADE WEAR. They know.
